OEM Keys Explained: Activation Rules and Limitations
"OEM" stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. These keys were initially sold bundled with other hardware. However, since they were not required for the equipment, they were later sold separately, which is why their price is lower than standard retail.
Windows OEM keys can only be activated once on a motherboard, and they are tied to that specific device. Any hardware changes or PC reformatting may deactivate the license. Keep in mind that if you format your PC while the OEM key is active, it will not be usable again, even if you try to deactivate it.
Furthermore, an OEM license cannot be used to upgrade or downgrade your operating system—you must perform a clean installation.
Some OEM keys may also require phone activation. You can find more information about this by following this link.
